Music and Mental Wellness ??‍♂️

How many of you are music lovers? Did you know that music saves lives? There’s no report or statistic to prove it, but there are stories.

I’ve met multiple people who have shared how music lifted their spirits during a deep season of depression. The most recent instance was last month while traveling abroad. I met someone through a mutual friend, and I noticed he had a big tattoo on his forearm saying, “There is a light that always shines.”

I asked him the story behind the tattoo, and he shared that the quote was a lyric from a song he repeatedly listened to during a very dark period of his life. He got the lyric tattoed to remind him of how he overcame his past and to inspire others by telling his story.

I’m sure he’s not the only one with a similar story. Music saves lives. In today’s email, we will look at 3 ways music improves your mental wellness.

“Music can lift us out of depression or move us to tears.”

Oliver Sacks

1. Music Elevates Your Mood and Motivation

Positive and upbeat emotions are intimately related to healthy mental wellbeing.

There is nothing better than turning up a happy song as loud as you can while you’re having a bad day. The upbeat musical sounds and lyrics will uplift or change your mood and give you confidence for the rest of the day.

Are you having a sluggish morning? Got a hard day or week ahead? Lacking the desire to run? Fast-paced, lively music keeps your body and mind moving, energizing you and motivating you to take pleasure in what is ahead. The best music for elevating mood, according to studies, is classical and ambient music, while hard electronic music and metal were thought to have the opposite impact.

2. Music Reduces Stress

It’s important to recognize that music has the power to reduce stress.

Certain musical genres have the intrinsic capacity to lower tension, whether they are playing in the background or you are giving them your full attention.

The mind is calmly stimulated by soft, ambient music. Look for playlists with gentle, largely electronic instrumental music with no persistent beat if you want to relieve some stress.

3. Music Improves Your Focus

Lastly, one of music’s numerous advantages is that you can listen to it as you go about your daily business.

It might be challenging for some people to focus and concentrate when doing an activity, whether it’s working, studying, or cleaning.

Knowing which music is appropriate for enhancing focus is crucial because several genres of music have been shown to increase focus. Experts suggest listening to upbeat, classical, or instrumental music when trying to focus on a task at hand.
