Good afternoon!
Can you guess what psychologists say is their patients’ most common problem? The inability to control their emotions. I have been interviewing psychologists for the past six months on Your Visionary Podcast and asked about the most common issue they see. I am not surprised that it has to do with controlling emotions because we are all emotional human beings. We get sad, we feel fear, we experience happiness, we get annoyed, and the list goes on and on. Emotions are the main influences behind the actions people take.
Learning to control emotions can be the difference between success and failure or healthy and unhealthy behavior. In this email, we will look at innovative and effective methods for managing emotions.

“You become what you think about all day long.”
– Ralph Waldo Emerson
Understand How You Feel
As with making any change, awareness is the first step. When looking at controlling your emotions, it’s no different. Understanding how you feel is the first step to mastering your emotions.
An emotion can be defined as an amplified, energetic thought pattern. Its overpowering energy usually makes it hard to stay present enough to watch it. It wants to take you over and, most of the time, succeeds, except you are strong enough to overpower it.
It’s important to know that your emotions are not here to make your life more complicated but to tell you something. Without them, you wouldn’t grow. Acknowledge your emotions; if they are not serving you, let them go!
Don’t Sleep on Sleep
Your emotional state is influenced by the kind of sleep you receive and how much of it you get. Many factors can affect the mood of someone who is sleep deprived. Anxiety, depression, and mortality risk all rise due to poor sleep. According to a 2016 study by researchers at the non-profit organization RAND Europe, those who slept for fewer than six hours a night had a 13% higher death risk than those who slept for seven to nine hours.
Here are a few ways to improve the quality of your sleep:
• Make sure that your bedroom is pitch black.
• Avoid using electronic devices.
• Relax your mind before bed.
• Develop an evening ritual.
Improve Your Communication Skills
In the world today, most actions are characterized by selfish motives — what is in it for me?
This way of thinking does not lead to a healthy community. If you are interested in improving your relationships with the people around you, you must understand the principles behind communication — speaking and listening. When you acknowledge your needs, you give others insight into how best to help you at any given time. When you are open to listening to others, you create a safe space of vulnerability and comfort.
